As wiki, Francis Newton Gifford was an American football player and television sportscaster who was born on August 16, 1930 in Santa Monica, California. He died on August 9 2015 at the age of 84. His height was 6 feet and 1 inch and ethnicity was American. His parents were Lola Mae and Weldon Gifford who was an oil driller. He graduated from Bakersfield High School. Due to the poor grade point average in high school, he was not able to get an athletic scholarship in the University of Southern California. He played a season of football for Bakersfield Junior College where he formed a Junior college team and earned grades to apply for USC from where he graduated in 1952.
Beginning in the year 1952,the young player spent his whole NFL career with the “New York Giants” playing both as offense and defense. He had five trips to the NFL Championship Game. His biggest season might be 1956 when he won the league’s Most Valuable Player Award. When a hard tackle laid him out, he lost his 18 months of his Prime career. Chuck Bednarik knocked him out on a passing play when he suffered a severe head injury that made him retire from football in the year 1961 but he again returned to the Giants in 1962, by changing his positions to wide receiver and from running back. After his playing days ended, he became a commentator specifically for NFL on CBS. ABC has originally planned to have Gifford in their broadcasting, when Monday Night Football was launched in the year 1970, but as he still had a year left on his contract with CBS, he couldn’t. However, he replaced Keith Jackson the following year and was involved in the show for about 27 or 28 years. He series became the longest running prime time sports in TV history in an era with only three television broadcast networks and also, developed into one of the most valuable franchises. He was also the host of British TV network and commentator on other ABC programs like the Olympics. He also showed his acting side appearing as a guest star on the NBC TV series called “Hazel”.
Gifford married his long time girlfriend with whom he had been dating from the college, Maxine Avis Ewart on January 13, 1952. They have three children named Jeff, Kylie and Vicoria and five grand children. He was reported of having affair with many others. Gifford again married to fitness trainer Astrid Lindley. The marriages ended in divorce and finally, he had next wife, television host Kathee Lee Gifford and they live in Greenwich with their son and daughter.
