One of the finalists on the sixth season of American Idol, Sanjaya Malakar was born on September 10, 1989 in Capitol Hill, in downtown Seattle. He was born with mixed ethnicity to a Bengali Indian immigrant father Vasudeva Malakar who was a musician and an American-born mother Jillian (Recchi) Blyth who was of Italian descent. When Sanjaya was three years old, his parents had a divorce, due to which he had a very hard life without proper parental love. Currently Malakar is one of the demanding young singer who has sang many f the hit songs during the American idol and also has made many guest appearances in the television.

Talking about his early life, he spent the preponderance of his influential years in the Seattle area, California and Kauai, Hawaii. When his parents had a divorce, the family had no money coming in. For elementary school, Malakar attended Martha Lake Elementary School situated in Lynnwood, Washington. And then for middle school, he joined Northshore Junior High School and Seattle Waldorf School in Bothell, Washington. In order focus on a music career, Malakar passed the General Educational Development test.

A shy teen, Malakar went to give an audition for American Idol in Seattle on September 19, 2006 with his sister Shyamali. In Seattle audition, he sang "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours" one of Wonder's signature songs as he cited Stevie Wonder as his idol. Malakar sang "Some Kind of Wonderful" for his next performance. Then after he sang "Ain't No Mountain High Enough". By singing different songs and giving his best on each and every one of them, he finally reached top eight.  In the top eight, he sang "Bésame Mucho" for which was his first commonly well-received presentation by the judges in the finals. He was subsequently eliminated in 7th place after performing “Something to Talk About" on the previous night.
